Enough of this indecision! The Coin of Fate has decided: non-gathered bodice with coat sleeves and something similar to this treatment for the trim. I don't care if it is appropriate for cotton or not - I'm just making it and moving on.
I'm starting today - yay!

I love the trim. An easy way to finish the edges if you're using self fabric is to tear strips on the straight of grain, then fold and iron one half to the middle, just like bias tape, and the other all the way to the opposite fold. Then make sure the side folded just to the middle is on top and the side to the fold is enclosed beneath that. Does that make sense?
I used this on my yellow wool dress and was very happy with it. The pink sheer I hemmed all the box pleating because I wanted to keep it sheer.
You may know this already, of course, but if not and you want to use self trim? It'll save hours and the headache of narrow trim finishing :)

And I friend of mine just did a tucked bodice, and if it weren't for the close-up she took I'd swear it was darted:
