OUr school district is HUGE on "character education", so they just sent out this character strengths quiz that we are all going to take in our classes, and the teachers were supposed to take it first and share it with our students. I thought it was amusing, so I decided to share the link with you guys too: https://www.viacharacter.org/survey/account/register

They rank you on 24 character traits, and I thought my top and bottom ones were quite appropriate for me.

1.Appreciation Of Beauty & Excellence
Noticing and appreciating beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in various domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience. (SO true! This one is huge for me. I can't even tell you how often I get emotional over something that's beautiful, whether that's art or nature or music or writing or performance or whatever.)

2.Judgment
Thinking things through and examining them from all sides; not jumping to conclusions; being able to change one's mind in light of evidence; weighing all evidence fairly. (Yes again! I change my mind about things - even huge things - on a regular basis, and I am a lover of research and facts over tradition and opinions)

3.Love Of Learning
Mastering new skills, topics, and bodies of knowledge, whether on one's own or formally; related to the strength of curiosity but goes beyond it to describe the tendency to add systematically to what one knows. (Yep. Another one right on the nose.)

4.Curiosity
Taking an interest in ongoing experience for its own sake; finding subjects and topics fascinating; exploring and discovering. (OMG yes! This is one that I'm trying to develop even more in my life right now because it makes me so happy to discover new things)

5.Love
Valuing close relations with others, in particular those in which sharing & caring are reciprocated; being close to people. (I don't have a lot of close relationships in my life, but the ones that I have are ENORMOUSLY important to me)

... and then the bottom of the barrell...

20.Social Intelligence
Being aware of the motives/feelings of others and oneself; knowing what to do to fit into different social situations; knowing what makes other people tick. (Ha! Yep. I absolutely suck at fitting in and figuring out what's going on in other people's heads)

21.Zest
Approaching life with excitement and energy; not doing things halfway or halfheartedly; living life as an adventure; feeling alive and activated. (hahahah! Yes again. I'm totally lazy and drag-ass by nature)

22.Spirituality
Having coherent beliefs about the higher purpose and meaning of the universe; knowing where one fits within the larger scheme; having beliefs about the meaning of life that shape conduct and provide comfort. (I feel a little bit bad that this one is so low, but it's probably accurate. I'm fascinated by spirituality, but their definitions of what that means does not line up very well with what I believe.)

23.Self-Regulation
Regulating what one feels and does; being disciplined; controlling one's appetites and emotions. (*snort* I'm actually surprised that this one isn't last. I have virtually no self-discipline in my life, except maybe with money)

24.Teamwork
Working well as a member of a group or team; being loyal to the group; doing one's share. (HAHAHAHHAH!!! OMG, yes! I'm the world's worst team member. Group work is TORTURE for me!)

This was really interesting! I took the quiz for funsies...I feel like their idea of spirituality was heavily geared toward a typical 'religion' mindset, or having a set of beliefs that you rely on in times of stress or trouble. Self regulation was my worst one! Zest was pretty far down, too. We can drag ass an be unregulated together!
Monday, December 7th, 2015 06:56 pm (UTC)
lol! I think that's why I like you so much. I have a huge aversion to "zesty" people! ;)

And I agree about the spirituality thing, so thank-you for saying that. I'm almost embarrassed to share my results with my coworkers because I'm afraid they will judge me harshly on that one. They all have spirituality in their top 5, and I'm worried that they are going to think I'm a bad person because I scored so low on that one. But as an agnostic/UU person, my spirituality is almost indistinguishable from my top 5 character traits - especially #1. I have a huge appreciation of the divine and see it in everything in the world around me. I just don't approach spiritual matters in the same way traditionally religious people do.
Monday, December 7th, 2015 08:17 pm (UTC)
Me too, and I think that's why my spirituality is also one of the bottom ones.
Monday, December 7th, 2015 06:59 pm (UTC)
BTW - what was your top trait? I would guess that honesty and bravery would be high for you!
Monday, December 7th, 2015 07:35 pm (UTC)
HAA! You're good at this; Honesty was my #1! Prudence and Judgement were 2 and 3, respectively...I'm feeling pretty anal today apparently. :P

Bravery was 10, so kind of in the middle. I feel like maybe skewing hard toward "prudence" canceled out some of the "bravery" questions, because they were about things like acting in the face of opposition and I tended to be pretty conservative on those answers in favor of assessing things before acting, if that make sense.

Also, I think there's nothing wrong with being able to see the divine and...I guess, sacred?...in everyday things. I flopped hard on the appreciation of beauty and excellence, and I always have really admired people that have such a deep recognition and appreciation of the amazing things in our world. I tend to get so I don't see the forest for the trees, if you will, and it's good for me to be around people that have such a different understanding of the universe than I do!

I uploaded mine to Google Drive for anyone who wants a peek!

So fun! Thanks for sharing your answers!
Monday, December 7th, 2015 08:20 pm (UTC)
Mine was fairly similar to yours. Same bottom traits, lol! and 1-4 are:

1. Love of learning.
Mastering new skills, topics, and bodies of knowledge, whether on one's own or formally; related to the strength of curiosity but goes beyond it to describe the tendency to add systematically to what one knows.

2.Gratitude
Being aware of and thankful for the good things that happen; taking time to express thanks.

3.Appreciation Of Beauty & Excellence
Noticing and appreciating beauty, excellence, and/or skilled performance in various domains of life, from nature to art to mathematics to science to everyday experience.

4.Humor
Liking to laugh and tease; bringing smiles to other people; seeing the light side; making (not necessarily telling) jokes.
Tuesday, December 8th, 2015 02:39 am (UTC)
Oh yeah - I can definitely see the gratitude trait in you! I love that we have so many similar results! :)
Monday, December 7th, 2015 08:59 pm (UTC)
LMAO.. here's mine!

Top 5
1 Love of learning
2 Perseverance
3 Judgment
4 Love
5 Humor

Bottom 5
20 Gratitude
21 Prudence
22 Teamwork
23 Social Intelligence
24 Spirituality
Tuesday, December 8th, 2015 02:33 am (UTC)
Yep! I knew there was a reason why I liked you so much! ;)
Monday, December 7th, 2015 09:36 pm (UTC)
Wow, this could totally be me. I especially adore your top trait! What a beautiful phrase that is!

Are you interested in Myers-Briggs at all? After reading this list, I suspect you might be an INFP like me. :)
Tuesday, December 8th, 2015 02:29 am (UTC)
Yep! I'm an INFP too. Although occasionally I get an INTP. I'm pretty even on those.

We totally need o hang out in real life sometime! ;)

How fun that you are the same! I'm ENFJ. :-)
Tuesday, December 8th, 2015 08:42 am (UTC)
This is such an interesting little quiz. My results:
Top:
1.honesty
2 creativity
3. Judgement
4. Prudence
5. Kindness
6. Gratitude
6. Appreciation of beauty and excellence
I can't argue with any of those. Some of them are traits I highly value. I had to read the prudence one though, because I'm not a prude!!!! But if that's the definition, then I guess I am.
Bottom:
19 Zest- I half agree with this one. I don't always wake with excitement for life. But I never do anything half heartedly. I'm an all or nothing kind of gal.
20 Humility- hrmmmnm would of thought this would be higher but I was thinking about my costuming on some of them and nope I do want people to know I did such and such.... So maybe I'm not that humble. 😕
21 Social intelligence- socially awkward and social anxiety.... This one makes sense
22 Forgiveness- I'm a horrible grudge holder. Sadly Can't deny this one
23Self regulation- did you say chocolate? yea...... No argument

Your Teamwork reaction amused me - we recently had a staff-day for brainstorming how things will be organised in our recently-restructured department and it started with a communication-style survey.

There were 4 basic types and we had to fill-in the survey, add up the results and go stand in the corner of the room that corresponded with our highest score.

Guess who ended up standing in a corner all on his own. Thy gave each type a management-speak name but I like to think of mine as the Impatient corner as that was the first box I ticked, and I think it illustrated very clearly how unsuited I am to teamwork.

It did, however, give me the opportunity to point out some of the working methods likely to get good results from me , and the ones that are likely to have me climbing the walls in frustration, so (unlike many of these staff activities days the university puts us through) it wasn't a complete waste of a day.

BTW - I'd have taken the quiz you linked to, and shared my results with you but it objected to my not have more than one name and I couldn't be bothered to fudge my way through registering.

1.Creativity
Thinking of novel and productive ways to conceptualize and do things; includes artistic achievement but is not limited to it. - Yes

2.Leadership
Encouraging a group of which one is a member to get things done and at the same time maintain good relations within the group; organizing group activities and seeing that they happen. -- I have social anxiety...that means I can be really great objective leader and terrified of group work at the same time?

3.Love Of Learning
Mastering new skills, topics, and bodies of knowledge, whether on one's own or formally; related to the strength of curiosity but goes beyond it to describe the tendency to add systematically to what one knows. --Yes

4.Judgment
Thinking things through and examining them from all sides; not jumping to conclusions; being able to change one's mind in light of evidence; weighing all evidence fairly. -Yes

5.Perspective
Being able to provide wise counsel to others; having ways of looking at the world that make sense to oneself/others. --Yup

And some of the bottom ones:

21.Zest
Approaching life with excitement and energy; not doing things halfway or halfheartedly; living life as an adventure; feeling alive and activated.

22.Gratitude
Being aware of and thankful for the good things that happen; taking time to express thanks.

23.Spirituality
Having coherent beliefs about the higher purpose and meaning of the universe; knowing where one fits within the larger scheme; having beliefs about the meaning of life that shape conduct and provide comfort.

24.Hope
Expecting the best in the future and working to achieve it; believing that a good future is something that can be brought about.

Some of the questions lacked enough context, or just made me twitch. (Diets why?) I expected Spirituality to be near the bottom along with Zest. Gratitude, not sure why it is low I think I express it differently than what the test expects. And Hope is at the bottom cause I'm pretty damn cynical at times, which is something I need to work on.

Myers Briggs I always end up INTP

I love personality quizzes. LOL On the Myers-Briggs, I used to score ISTJ all the time. I think my T has become more balanced, because I have tested ISFJ in the past few years.

"Spirituality" was in my top 5 and I still love you. :) I do agree with the thought that "spirituality" per this quiz is related to traditional, organized religion. One of the things I didn't like is that the art and beauty questions were all about *visual* things. I am WAY more moved by sound. Music can make me cry. I think if the questions relating to Appreciation of Beauty had been more inclusive of music, I'd have scored a lot higher there.

My top 5 are:
1. Love
2.Gratitude
3.Spirituality
4.Forgiveness (this one I feel has *always* been a strength of mine. I can let offenses go very easily, and I don't get offended easily in the first place)
5.Perseverance

My bottom 5 are:
20.Self-Regulation (it was that plate-full of cookies question that did me in, I'm sure)
21.Leadership (I'm a great 2nd in command, but I *hate* being in charge)
22.Creativity (I'm crafty, not creative)
23. Zest (maybe I like reading too much?)
24.Social Intelligence (way too true. I'm totally oblivious unless someone outright tells me)

This was really interesting! These were my results:

1. Humor
2. Honesty
3. Judgement
4. Prudence
5. Curiosity
...
20. Forgiveness
21. Humility
22. Social Intelligence
23. Self-Regulation
24. Spirituality

I can definitely understand the top 5, though I would have thought that creativity would be higher (it was #9). I would have used to think hope (#11) would be higher, too, but I think lately I've been feeling a bit bogged down in that dept. And I feel like zest's (#19) questions were very much related to my daily life. Considering that means my job, and not fun things I do in my own time, it's no wonder that's so low! I do find it interesting that my curiosity score is really high, but my love of learning score is really low (#17). I wonder if that's because I dabble in so many things that I never have a chance to master anything?
Wednesday, December 9th, 2015 05:23 am (UTC)
Ha! Ours come out really similar. We had 4 of the 5 of the same for both top and bottom. I"m glad to see Hope wasn't in the bottom for you. I think that is a good thing.
